- Breed Societies

Information about different horse breeds straight from the people who know best.

• British Connemara Pony Society
The Connemara Pony Breeders Society was founded in Ireland in 1923 with the object of conserving and developing the ponies in the area. Inspections were started to select the best ponies from the existing population for entry into the first volume of the stud book which was published in 1926. This work is still carried out today, with all stock being inspected before acceptance for the stud book. The society purchased their own stallions who travelled round Connemara for the service of ponies at very low fees. The English Connemara Pony Society was founded in 1947 to promote the breed in the British Isles. Now the society has 800 members, and the ponies have become extremely popular for both children and adults alike as they excel in so many fields. The name was changed to the British Connemara Pony Society in 2004.

• British Skewbald and Piebald Association
The British Skewbald and Piebald Association was formed in 1988 by a group of Skewbald and Piebald enthusiasts who wished to see an association dedicated to the promotion and welfare of the coloured horses throughout the entire United Kingdom. • Dartmoor Pony Society
The primary role of the Society is to maintain the Stud Book which holds records tracing back the pedigrees of the registered Dartmoor Pony for over 100 years. The original records were held in the Polo Pony Stud Book, and then in the stud books of the National Pony Society. Finally thirty years ago the Dartmoor Pony Society took over maintaining the Stud Book and issues in hard copy form all the foal registrations, transfers and re-entries into the Stallion and gelding sections each year. Her mission is that “For Riders” products as well as being beautifully produced should be of exceptional quality as well as unique and fun. It was the addition of the white numnah that made her Belgian chocolate saddles immediately hit the spot, and from the initial thought that soap for dirty riders had to be made from natural oats (what else!), has developed a complete range of effective organic oats-based aromatherapy products. For Riders Repair Handcream for Outside hands has become a best seller as it really works.

• Haydon Hunt
The Haydon Hunt country straddles the river South Tyne during much of its length, running from Fourstones, on the western outskirts of Hexham, westwards to the county boundary with Cumbria. Much of the Saturday Country is in this fertile South Tyne Valley. North of this, rising to well over 1000’, lies spectacular Hadrian’s Wall whilst to the south is Hexham Shire, which runs runs through to Cumbria and the foothills of the Pennines. At its most southern extremity, it borders Ullswater Hunt country, although a small strip between the two is currently lent to The North Pennine Hunt. It also adjoins The Bewcastle and North Tyne Hunts to the west and north and The Tynedale and Braes of Derwent Hunts to the east and south. It’s a large and, in many parts, wild and still remarkably unspoiled, stone-wall country, requiring versatile hounds with stamina and a sure-footed horse, at home on heather or grass.

• Tynedale Hunt
Formed in 1839, the Tynedale Hunt is based at kennels located on Stagshaw Bank, just north of Corbridge in Northumberland, and operates in an area ranging roughly from the Tyne to the Wansbeck and from Hexham to Ponteland. Pronounced ‘Tindle’ because that was how the name was spelled when the Hunt Club was first created (before SATS), the Tynedale has been hunting foxes in south Northumberland for over 160 years. Our main practical purpose has always been to help control the fox population in our area, but hunting also gives many people the pleasure of taking part in an activity that brings together the art of hunting hounds, horsemanship, social contact and a love of the countryside.
